Verrucae: More or less ampullaceous, adhesive evaginations of the column, simple or more rarely compound (Carlgren, 1949; p. 10), involve not only the ectoderm, but the other layers as well (Stephenson, 1928; p. 15), without nematocysts in their central part (Carlgren, 1949; p. 10). Thick-walled, bladder-like, often hollow outgrowths of the body-wall (Stephenson, 1918; p. 8). Rarely, as in Sagartia, there is no evagination, but the ectoderm shows same structure as that of the proper verrucae and is adhesive (suckers) (Carlgren, 1949; p. 10). These structures are able to adhere with considerable force to gravel and debris, the anemones often coating themselves with this (Stephenson, 1928; p. 15).
