Mesogleal Sphincter: A sphincter muscle in which the muscle fibers are sunk into the mesoglea of the column. Each surrounds a fluid-filled cavity to allow contraction, thus giving a spongy appearance and function. They vary in form, but are usually elongate in transverse section (Stephenson, 1928: p. 10). Some species have two mesogleal sphincter muscles in the same animal.
